REGIONAL EFFORTS TO
COMBAT LAND DEGRADATION
The Regional Authority
has for many years been concerned with the accelerating land degradation
due
to the above factors and has all along been assisting
all endeavours leading to reduction of the problem. During the late sixties
and immediately after the drought years of the seventies, each District
had embarked on a lifelong tree planting exericse. Afforestation and
re-forestation as well as rehabilitation of infrastructure are being given
priority in the Kilimanjaro Region. These efforts were supported by the
government through financial and technical support to back-stop the community
efforts in tree planting.
Some of the other efforts by Government and non-governmental agencies and
organisations include :
-
The Bonite Tree Planting
Campaign started by the Chairman of IPP, Mr. Reginald Mengi some time
in 1988. Through this campaign, over 31,183,793 trees have been planted during
the last ten years.
-
The Tanzania Forest
Action Plan (TFAP) which was launched in 1989. It has assisted the Region
in Mwanga District Agro-forestry Programme and tree planting, especially
natural trees, community forest management and water catchment forest management.
-
KVFP (Kilimanjaro Village
Forest Project); a project assisted by the Government of Japan through
JICA to develop and improve re-forestation and extension technologies in
relation to social forest activities in semi-arid areas in order to contribute
to the development of village forestry in Tanzania. This project is implemented
in Same district.
-
TIP - a non-governmental
organisation from Holland, assisting the
vill
ages in the Same and Mwange Districts in agro-forestry
practices in hilly areas and rehabilitation of traditional infrastructure
and its management.
-
MIFIPRO - a
non-governmental organisation from Belgium working in the Mwanga District,
assisting them in traditional irrigation and agro-forestry practices.
-
KIRECA (Kilimanjaro
Region Environmental Consultative Council) - a resident non-governmental
organisation which gives consultancies on environmental conservation.
-
East African Cross Border
Biodiversity Project - a UNDP/GEF funded project operating in South Pare
mountain ranges to combat biodiversity loss.
